Waterdeep is known as the “Shining Jewel of the North.” It is by far the largest and arguably the best known city in the North, perhaps in all the Realms.

Government:
Waterdeep is ruled by the Masked Lords, a council of rulers that is generally unknown. Whenever the lords are required to appear in public (Court hearings of murder, treason, etc.) they wear a faceless mask to keep their identity private.

Crime:
There is a large standing city guard that works to keep city defended and city watch which protects the public. Crime, although Waterdeep is a thriving metropolis, is relatively low. Due it part to the diligence of the city guard, but partially to the existence of Skullport over a mile below the city. Skullport is part of the Underdark and is a thriving port city for criminals and other questionable seedy activities.

Races/Commerce/Magic:
All races can be seen living in Waterdeep.
And most anything can be found, for a price. With the success of commerce and trade many different Guilds have arisen to support them.
Magic of all forms can be found in town. Training, research and spells are easily found and acquired, for a price of course.

Religion:
Most forms of religion can be found in or under Waterdeep.  Some of the largest temples are for Oghma, Tyr, Tmpus, Gond, Selune, Mystra, Silvanus, Mielikki, Lathander, Sune and Tymora.  the temples for dark gods are said to lie beneath in the Undermountain.   Many other religious orders make their home in Waterdeep, including the Holy Order of the Knights of Samular.

Geography:
Waterdeep is a natural deepwater harbor city. Waterdeep also backs up to Mt. Waterdeep. Mt. Waterdeep is home to numerous old tunnels, corridors and passages, rumored to be the remains of a Dwarven citadel; this area is referred to by most as Undermountian.
